Position Summary

THE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM ASSISTANT DIRECTOR SHALL OVERSEE THE WELFARE AND SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN AND WILL ASSIST WITH ORGANIZING AND PLANNING FIELD TRIPS, DESIGNATING RESPONSIBILITIES AND SUPERVISING THE STAFF, AND HANDLING DISCIPLINE OF CHILDREN WHEN NECESSARY. THE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM ASSISTANT DIRECTOR WILL DRIVE CITY VEHICLES INCLUDING A MINIBUS AND PASSENGER VAN.

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• ASSIGNS DAILY TASKS FOR THE AFTER-SCHOOL STAFF.
• ENSURES THAT ALL STAFF AND CHILDREN ADHERE TO THE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES SET
FORTH BY THE PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT AND OTHER APPLICABLE POLICIES.
• FACILITATES AFTER-SCHOOL STAFF TRAINING.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION AND DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
• ACTS AS CAMP DIRECTOR IN THE ABSENCE OF THE OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME (OST) COORDINATOR.
• ASSIST OST COORDINATOR IN STAFF TRAINING AND EVALUATIONS.
• FOLLOW ASSIGNED DUTIES FROM OST COORDINATOR.
• DRIVES CITY VEHICLES INCLUDING MINIBUS AND PASSENGER VAN TO TRANSPORT PASSENGERS.
• PICKS UP PASSENGERS AT PREARRANGED LOCATIONS.
• ENSURES PASSENGERS REACH THEIR DESTINATIONS SAFELY AND ON TIME.
• OBSERVES SAFETY REGULATIONS AND STATE LAWS REGARDING VEHICLE OPERATION; ENSURES
PASSENGERS ALSO FOLLOW APPLICABLE SAFETY REGULATIONS.
• ENSURES VEHICLE EQUIPMENT SUCH AS BRAKES, LIGHTS, WINDSHIELD WIPERS, ETC., IS
MAINTAINED AND OPERATING PROPERLY.
• REPORTS VEHICLE PROBLEMS TO OST COORDINATOR OR CITY MECHANICS.
• SUBMITS VEHICLE ACCIDENT REPORTS WHEN NEEDED.
• CONDUCTS ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON VEHICLES INCLUDING GASOLINE, OIL, AND WATER AND
CHECKING TIRE PRESSURE; ENSURES MORE SPECIALIZED MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS ARE
PERFORMED.
• PLANS ORGANIZE AND FACILITIES STAFF ORIENTATION.
• ASSISTS IN PREPARATION OF BI-WEEKLY REPORTS.
• ASSISTS AND COORDINATE WITH ACTIVITY LEADS IN LOGISTICAL SET-UP AND CLEAN-UP OF THE
TUCKER RECREATION CENTER INCLUDING GROUP AREA/LOCATION ASSIGNMENT AND SCHEDULE.
• MONITOR CLEANLINESS OF FACILITY AND ENSURE THAT ROUTINE DAILY CLEANING IS PERFORMED
BY STAFF.
• ASSIST WITH FIELD TRIP PLANNING AND COORDINATION AS NEEDED.
• OVERSEE THE PLANNING OF AGE-APPROPRIATE GAMES, CRAFTS, AND ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN
AGES 5- 12.
• PREPARE ACCIDENT/INCIDENT REPORTS AS NEEDED AND FOLLOW ESTABLISHED PROCEDURES FOR
REPORTING ACCIDENTS/INCIDENTS.
• HANDLE MEDICAL, SAFETY, AND SEVERE WEATHER EMERGENCIES PER THE PROCEDURES NOTED
IN THE AFTER-SCHOOL STAFF MANUAL AND DURING IN-SERVICE TRAINING.
• COMPLETES NEEDED REPORTS AND SUBMIT THEM TO THE APPROPRIATE PARTY.
• SCHEDULES AND CONDUCTS PARENT CONFERENCES AS NEEDED.
• MAINTAINS POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH PARENTS, CHILDREN, AND STAFF/
• ASSISTS IN KEEPING FINANCIAL PAYMENT AND ATTENDANCE RECORDS FOR EACH MONTH OF
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING.
• PERFORM OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
• ABILITY TO BE ON YOUR FEET FOR 5-HOUR SHIFT.
• MUST BE ABLE TO WORK OUTDOORS IN THE PARKS.
• ENTHUSIASTIC AND POSITIVE ATTITUDE.
• EXCELLENT COMMUNICATION SKILLS.
• ABILITY TO LEARN AND ENFORCE THE CAMP’S SAFETY AND OPERATING ROLES.
• MUST ATTEND STAFF MEETINGS AND ORIENTATION.
• KNOWLEDGE IN SPORTS, STEAM, OUTDOOR EDUCATION, ARTS & CRAFTS.
• PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH CHILDREN.
• EXCELLENT DRIVING SKILLS.
• EXCELLENT TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS.
• THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF TRAFFIC REGULATIONS, ROAD SIGNS, AND ROUTES.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• MUST POSSESS A VALID STATE OF GEORGIA DRIVER’S LICENSE AND DEMONSTRATE A MINIMUM
OF SEVEN (7) YEARS OF SAFE DRIVING EXPERIENCE. MUST BE ABLE TO OPERATE CITY VEHICLES,
INCLUDING PASSENGER VANS AND MINIBUSES, AND MAINTAIN AN ACCEPTABLE DRIVING
RECORD IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CITY’S VEHICLE USAGE POLICY AND INSURANCE
REQUIREMENTS.
• MANDATED REPORTER CERTIFICATION REQUIRED- TRAINING PROVIDED.
• BEHAVIORAL SUPPORT AND DE-ESCALATION CERTIFICATION, PREFERRED TRAINING PROVIDED.
• MUST BE ABLE TO MANAGE MULTIPLE ITEMS AT THE SAME TIME; PRIORITIZE TASKS; AND MEET
RECURRING AND PERIODIC TIME CONSTRAINTS.
EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS, EXPERIENCE:
• MUST ATTEND CITY-APPROVED CPR/FIRST AID/AED TRAINING SESSION AND CERTIFICATION
WITHIN 14 DAYS OF EMPLOYMENT AND MAINTAIN CERTIFICATION THROUGHOUT THE
EMPLOYMENT PERIOD – REQUIRED.
• HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENT PREFERRED.
• VALID STATE OF GEORGIA DRIVER’S LICENSE AND CLEAN DRIVING RECORD REQUIRED
THROUGHOUT EMPLOYMENT.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
• ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN GAMES, SPORTS, AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDING WATER-BASED
GAMES AND ACTIVITIES.
• ABLE TO MAINTAIN ATTENTION AND HIGH LEVEL OF ENERGY OR EXCITEMENT FOR EXTENDED
PERIODS OF TIME.
• MUST BE ABLE TO SPEND MAJORITY THE OF TIME OUTDOORS AND TOLERATE A VARIETY OF
WEATHER CONDITIONS.
• PROLONG PERIODS OF STANDING AND WALKING.
• MUST BE ABLE TO TRAVERSE VARIOUS ATHLETIC GROUNDS AND FACILITIES.
• WORK IS PERFORMED IN BOTH INDOOR AND OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTS AND MAY REQUIRE
SITTING, STANDING, WALKING, STOOPING, BENDING, OR CROUCHING. THE EMPLOYEE MAY BE
EXPOSED TO NOISE, DUST DIRT, GREASE, MACHINERY WITH MOVING PARTS, IRRITATING
CHEMICALS, AND OCCASIONAL COLD AND INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND MAY
OCCASIONALLY LIFT LIGHT TO HEAVY OBJECTS AND CLIMB LADDERS.
• PHYSICALLY ABLE TO DRIVE A VEHICLE FOR PROLONGED PERIODS OF TIME.
