Position Description
POSITION OVERVIEW
This position entails maintenance work on street, storm drainage, and utility systems and/or equipment operation work performed to maintain and repair Village public works and water/sewer facilities.

Work involves performance of manual tasks requiring some skills or special knowledge acquired through experience. Work also includes operation of light equipment and trucks, as well as several types of medium to heavy motorized equipment as a regular part of assigned duties.

Normal work responsibilities call for high levels of physical efforts characterized by lifting and hauling of loads exceeding fifty (50) pounds many times throughout a normal workday. Physical efforts may include: stooping, crawling, crouching, climbing and other continuous physical activity. Other forms of continuous activity include using heavy power tools, the use of which may be required in any outdoor weather conditions.

Working hours are 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.


JOB DUTIES
A Maintenance Worker 1 participates in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, storm drainage and related public works facilities; performs manual street and storm/sanitary sewer maintenance work at a public works crew work site; operates equipment such as back hoes to assist in the repair of storm/sanitary sewer system lines, as well as in the removal and replacement of worn out street surface asphalt.

Removes debris from street surfaces and rakes leaves and brush; assists with asphalt work, performing tamping and raking work; performs road maintenance work; cleans streets of glass and other materials from the roadway in the aftermath of vehicle accidents; assists in erecting street label, stop and other regulatory signing; helps erect proper traffic channelization cones and protection devices to protect crew work operations on work sites with higher traffic densities; acts as flagger on crew operations to control the flow of traffic; and maintains an awareness of proper safety procedures and guidelines and applies these in performing daily activities and tasks.

Cleans debris from storm drainage structures (i.e. gutters, culverts, storm/sanitary sewers or drainage structures) and cleans out or repairs basins and sub-basins as part of storm sewer maintenance activities; repairs breaks in storm/sanitary sewer lines; cleans storm/sanitary sewer culverts with sewer jet and other equipment.

Operates light equipment such as small tractors, riding mowers, pickup trucks, four-wheeled drive vehicles, as well as medium to heavy pieces of motorized equipment, including, but not limited to, a backhoe, front end loader, skid steer, asphalt spreader, pavement rollers, pay loader and dump truck. May use tools and equipment such as concrete grinders, impact wrenches, hand saws, tire remover, etc. in the process of performing street and storm/sanitary sewer maintenance activities. Utilizes auxiliary equipment (compressors and air operated tools like a jack hammer), chain saws and other power tools; jack hammers, air compressors, road cutters, et. al.

Helps build forms, pours, and assists in finishing concrete; maintains or assists in the repair of curbs, gutters, culverts, catch basins, storm sewers, sidewalks and retaining walls; loads and unloads materials by hand or with the use of a front-end loader; performs litter, leaf and trash pick-up; performs basic right-of-way grass maintenance (mowing); loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, timber with heavy mechanical equipment; digs post holes and sets posts for signing or snow fencing placement; erects street label, stop and other regulatory signage; operates plow/salt truck to control snow and ice; loads and unloads materials by hand or with the use of a front end loader; participates in pavement marking operations; may cut brush to daylight stop signs or to open up the visibility of traffic at overgrown intersections; keeps current with preventative maintenance schedules for all assigned pieces of equipment; and services [fuels and changes fluids] and makes minor repairs to equipment as needed; provides lead work direction to when acting as the crew supervisor on specific jobs; and performs all other work as required.


MAINTENANCE WORKER I REQUIREMENTS
Previous experience in a Municipality is preferred, but not required.

This position requires the employee to be on-call for emergencies out of regular work hours periodically throughout the year.

Successful applicants for this position must possess the knowledge equivalent of a High School diploma with major course emphasis in a vocational program.

One to two years of experience in Public Works and/or utilities operations work is preferred.

Applicant should possess and maintain a current and valid Illinois driver's license with the appropriate “CDL” Class A endorsement. If not currently held, applicant must acquire within 1 year of employment.

Applicant must be capable of passing a work related pre employment physical examination and physical proficiency test.
