Under the direction of the Director of Public Works and the GIS Manager, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician will assist in creating, updating and maintaining all hardware and software necessary to operate the DPW’s Information Management Systems.

• Assesses, plans, creates, updates and maintains all Information Management System (I.M.S.) applications at the DPW and coordinates with the GIS Manager. These applications include but are not limited to: GIS, ECM, GPS, WEB Design and Document Imaging.
• Use ArcGIS for desktop software to improve the geospatial content of the DPW and Townships asset management system.
• Review and correct existing and incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality and completeness.
• Reads and/or interprets DPW maps, blueprints, survey documents, or sketches; proofing or comparing the information from different sources and ensuring accurate input into the GIS and Document Management systems.
• Request data model schema changes for the Township’s Enterprise geodatabase and help establish a standardize procedure for data entry.
• Create and customize public and internal web map applications.
• Maintain and update the DPW website and support the Township web page ensuring content is up to date and accurate.
• Provide technical training and support on the use and application of all DPW I.M.S. Applications as outlined above.
• Completes special projects as requested by DPW Management.
• Serves as a GIS and technology advocate to co-workers by providing guidance and support to field and office staff in the use and application of GID technology.
• Researches, gathers and enters data from variety of sources relating to DPW activities.
• Establishes and maintains effective relationships with vendors, department administrators, other employees, professional colleagues, and other interests.
• Operate Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment, while conducting project based field work.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Possess high school diploma, or its equivalent supplemented by formal training in public works.
• Minimum of 1 year of formal Geographic Information Science education or experience using GIS software.
• Experience of ESRI products, ArcGIS for Desktop, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS for Server
• Experience in Web Design.
• Experience in the use of Cityworks is desirable.
• Experience in working in a Public Works Department is desired.
• Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
• Possess strong knowledge of Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment use and principles.
• Proficient in the use of the Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office product suite.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Access and SQL.
• Have a proven capability to work independently under varying levels of direct supervision.
