The Appraiser Aide’s primary responsibility is to perform clerical and administrative support involving all appraisal and valuation activities as it pertains to real property in the Charter Township of Independence.

• Answer phones and assist public at the counter.
• Receive and process Warranty Deeds, Property Transfer Affidavits, Principle Residence Exemption Affidavits, Request to Rescind Principle Residence and Conditional Rescissions.
• Educate property owners in understanding the appraisal process.
• Receive and process daily mail.
• Participate in annual March Board of Review by assisting appraisers in preparation of necessary forms and scheduling appointments.
• Data entry of appraisal information, sketches, and photographs.
• Assist appraisers with completion of required annual reappraisals (20% of each property class per year).
• Assist Personal Property Examiner in the performance of audits.
• Perform parcel by parcel review for discovery of missing property on the assessment roll using current GIS maps.
• Assist appraiser in field, when necessary, and at the discretion of the Department Director.
• Other duties as assigned.
• High School Diploma and a valid Michigan Driver’s License are required.
• A general background in property valuation and appraisal methodology is required.
• Michigan Certified Assessor Technician (MCAT) Certification preferred. Must have the ability to attain certification within one year from date of hire if do not possess it currently.
• Experience in appraisal software programs (ie: Equalizer, Apex) preferred.
• Must have a working knowledge of MS Word and Excel programs.
• Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, public officials, and the general public.
• Must have the ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions with much attention to detail.
This position is a union position and is subject to the current collective bargaining agreement.
