Position Summary
The part-time Garden Manger will perform day to day tasks essential to the Clarkston Community Garden-McCord Property operations. This position will work closely with Parks Staff to maintain and upkeep the garden grounds and park property.

•Administrative tasks required for garden operations, such as but not limited to developing garden rules and regulations, development of rental agreements, creating newsletters for gardeners etc.
•Direct seasonal tilling on garden property.
•Coordinate and execute two annual Garden Meet & Greets with new gardeners prior to planting to review rules, layout, and expectations.
•Work with the department’s Community Relations Coordinator to stay active and involved at various community organizations, such as but not limited to the Lion’s Club, Rotary Club, and Optimist Club.
•Assist Township staff on mowing areas to protect staff and volunteers from ticks.
•Test soil as needed; and create plans based on soil results.
•Design method for tracking volunteer hours by gardener.
•Work with Township staff to identify projects to be funded by grants. Assist grant writers with creation of grant applications.
•Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers for Impact Weekend, and other seasonal volunteers as needed to perform necessary work on the garden.
•Observe and enforce garden rules.
•Monitor ongoing state of the garden; make recommendations to the department on repairs as needed.
•Inspect for disease and insect/animal issues on the property.
•Work with Township Staff to prepare garden advertisements and other marketing materials.
•Work with Township Staff on opportunities to host classes, camps, or other family events onsite at the garden.
•Work with volunteer organizations on projects specifically related to the needs of the garden and community garden plots.
•Perform other related duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
•Excellent communication skills.
•Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
•Knowledge of general vegetable gardening practices.
•Awareness of invasive species management, pests, and disease. Be wiling to research and request assistance as needed when issues arise.
•Ability to teach gardeners how to start from seeds, plant, soil care, water management, and companion planting.
•Ability to work accurately and quickly under operational deadlines.
•Ability to work in a face paced work environment.

Ability to organize work and work independently, as well as with a team.
•Ability to be reasonable and exercise mature judgment & initiative; with the ability to listen and solve problems collaboratively and proactively.
•Must be productive, courteous, flexible, as well as have effective work skills such as resourcefulness and conscientiousness.
•Ability to work comfortably outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
•Ability to interact in a professional, courteous manner with others
•Ability to use hand, power, and garden tools.
•Must be professional in appearance.


Minimum Qualifications
•Minimum of five years’ experience working community gardens, horticulture, community engagement, education, or a related field.
•Previous experience in the development, implementation, and management of a garden (other than a personal garden)


Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Vehicles Used
•A variety of hand, power, and garden tools.


Physical Demands
•While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, bend, reach and lift to 50 pounds.
•Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.


Working Conditions
•The employee in this position will be working outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.


Supervisory Responsibility
•The part-time Garden Manger will recruit, train, and supervise volunteers for the Clarkston Community Garden


Independence Fest
This position is required to work at Department’s annual 4th of July festival, Independence Fest
